5 Reasons Perth is the Perfect "City Reset" for Singaporean Parents and Kids

It’s no secret that Singaporeans love to travel, but there is one destination that we return to time and time again. But, what is it about Perth that makes it the undisputed favourite for Singaporean families with young kids? It’s not just about proximity, it’s about the total sensory reset. Here is why Perth hits the absolute sweet spot for us.

1. The 5-Hour, Zero-Jet-Lag Sweet Spot

Let’s be honest: long-haul flights with young kids can feel less like a holiday and more like an endurance test.

Perth is just a comfortable 5-hour flight from Changi Airport, which is actually shorter than flying to Tokyo or Seoul!. Best of all? There is no time difference. You step off the plane into a completely different landscape, but your kids remain on their exact sleep and meal schedules. No cranky, jet-lagged toddlers at 3:00 AM means a massive win for our sanity.

2. Space, Fresh Air, and the Great Outdoors

We live in a beautiful, hyper-efficient, but densely packed city. In Singapore, our weekend options usually revolve around air-conditioned malls or indoor playgrounds just to escape the tropical humidity.

Perth offers the absolute dream antidote, especially if you visit during its non-summer months from March to November (covering the autumn, winter, and spring seasons). During these months, the weather is gorgeously cool, crisp, and comfortable. Imagine packing a picnic blanket and spending the entire afternoon under a massive blue sky without breaking a single drop of sweat.

Everywhere you look, there is a giant, beautifully designed park with a playground (and usually a fantastic coffee cart nearby for the parents!). Whether it’s letting the kids run wild across the rolling green lawns of Kings Park until their cheeks are pink, or taking a breezy, light-jacket stroll along the beach, the open space and fresh, cool air let the whole family just breathe and play freely.

3. Up-Close Encounters (Without the Glass Barriers)

Singapore has world-class wildlife parks, but Perth offers interactive, hands-on experiences that city kids rarely get to experience.

For city kids used to seeing nature through a screen or a glass panel, being able to gently pat a koala or touch ancient rock formations deep inside a limestone cave is unforgettable (and also the reason why our 7-year old keeps asking to go back to Perth).

4. The Ultimate Road Trip Freedom

There is something incredibly liberating about picking up a rental car, loading up with a cooler bag full snacks, and hitting the open road. Because Western Australia drives on the left side of the road (just like here in Singapore), driving here feels immediately familiar and stress-free. (You don't even need an International Driving Permit IDP to drive in Perth since Singapore's Drivers License is in English!)

The routes are incredibly straightforward, whether you are driving an hour north to slide down the giant white sand dunes of Lancelin, or heading a few hours south toward the coastal magic of Busselton and the rolling vineyards of Margaret River. It allows families to travel at their own pace, stopping whenever a child needs a toilet break or whenever you spot a scenic fruit-picking farm on the roadside.

5. Stress-Free Dining Experience

Singaporeans are obsessed with good food, and Perth delivers. The cafe culture is awesome (their lattes are exceptional), and the seafood is as fresh as it gets. But for us, the real joy isn't just the quality of the food, it’s how stress-free the dining experience is.

Unlike the tight squeezes and long queues, and the judgey next-table patrons when our kids are fidgety (or a little loud), Perth restaurants and cafes are incredibly spacious and welcoming to families. Imagine sitting at an outdoor terrace with plenty of room for a stroller, enjoying a plate of premium Western Australian rock lobster or fish and chips, while the kids have space to move without you worrying about them bumping into the next table.

🎨 Turning Travel into Play & Learning: Our Travel Journal (Perth Edition)

For our family, travel is all about mixing play with learning. To help our kids truly engage with the trip, we started creating custom travel journals for them to learn, sketch, write, and note down their favourite memories. It has become their favourite wind-down activity back at the apartment/hotel, and it's an absolute lifesaver for keeping little hands busy while waiting for meals at restaurants instead of reaching for a device!

Here's our Perth edition which you can download and print it out for your little ones FOC!

💡 TGE-Tip for Printing: If you print the PDF double-sided, fold the pages down the middle, and secure the spine with a bit of colourful string or ribbon, you get a cute, lightweight little booklet that isn't heavy or bulky to carry around in a small backpack!

🎒 Stress-Free Packing: Free Family Checklist

The weather in Western Australia can change quickly—especially if you are traveling down south toward Margaret River where coastal breezes can get quite chilly. To ensure you don't forget the essentials (like the right sun protection, road trip snacks, and layering pieces for the kids), I’ve put together our family packing list that's printer friendly.

The Bottom Line

Perth isn’t just a holiday destination; it’s a change of pace. It strips away the hustle, the schedules, and the screen time, replacing them with coastal breezes, wildlife encounters, and genuine quality time together.

For Singaporean families looking to reconnect and let their kids experience the great outdoors, Perth will always feel like coming home, just with a much bigger backyard.
